Why did the bearers of the Mark have totally different responses?
~ I guess in my mind I would say because each of them had a different back story, and hey each had a different way of seeing things. Lucifer saw things with hatred and jealousy. Cain saw things as a means to and end, but later on went crazy and killed off his whole bloodline. Then Theres Dean, He saw things through with Hope and as much strength as he could muster up to fight off his own demons as well as the rest of the monsters in the world. I guess thats how I would see it, but thats just my point of view.
So are all these actions a result of bearing the Mark?
~ I think the actions that each person took may have been effected by the mark, but I wouldn't say that it was ALL to blame. When you look at the characters that had the Mark you can see a slight pattern to them.
** Lucifer - he had some daddy issues, and he hated the humans for it. He fell from Heaven for loving his father too much, and he was tricked into Hell.
** Cain - His life was led because he was angry at himself for killing his wife Abel. When Cain was had seen what he had made, The Knights of Hell, he realized they were doing more bad then good (they were Demons though!). He had finally come to the last Knight of Hell, Abadon, and she had possessed his wife Abel, but before Cain stabbed her Abadon 'smoked out' of Abel leaving Cain to look into his wife's eyes as she died.
** Dean - Even though he felt he was the worst person in the world because he couldn't save everyone from harm, he did a lot of good as well. He may have had the weight of the world on his shoulders but he recognized it as something he just had to do. When the mark came he was more hostile than he had ever been, and that started to scare not only himself but his brother as well. To be honest (Since he is my favorite character) He did change when he received the mark, but I think that he had changed a lot more when he went to Hell at the end of season 3.
What has bearing the Mark taught us?
~ The Mark has shown us that not everyone has the ability to harness the power of the mark, and that it could destroy the person whenever it wants. You just have to have more strength than it, which is a lot easier said then actually done. Each person to bear the Mark has gone rouge at least once or twice maybe even three times, but there was one character that was stronger then the Mark. That was Dean. He pushed away the great power it was trying to used against him and everyone around him,and he used it to hunt Supernatural beings everyday! To me he was the strongest one of them all.
Does the Mark control a person?
~ I wouldn't say the Mark totally controls a person, because like I said above Dean had the strength to actually fight the mark off for even just a little while. I can't say the same thing for the other two though. Cain may have fought it off for 1,000 years but he never was truly alive or like himself so to speak. He was technically already dead for the longest time, because he had tried to kill himself after he killed his wife but the mark wouldn't let him die. Just like it wouldn't let Dean die after he had been stabbed by Metatron.
